Art Paris 2023

March 30 - April 2 / 2023

La Galería Rebelde presents 3 female artists from Guatemala working with raw materials and craftsmanship traditions. Angélica Serech is a Mayan weaver from Comalapa. She reinvents the textile tradition of her indigenous legacy to create unique creations. Clara de Tezanos presents an installation about memory made out of found objects intervened with carpentry work that follows the tradition of crafted wood from Guatemala. Diana de Solares uses found materials to create assemblies with construction wood and industrial objects she picks up from her surroundings translated into sophisticated geometric languages with unique color and shapes. They use the tradition of craftsmanship that for centuries has identified Guatemala’s culture to create contemporary pieces of her own stories.

Art Paris 2022

April 7 - 10 / 2022

La Galería Rebelde participated for the second consecutive year in the prestigious international art fair Art Paris. For this 2022 edition the gallery presents a selection of contemporary Guatemalan artists whose works create an homage to nature and sacredness. For this edition, the gallery presents the works of Sandra Monterroso, Angélica Serech, Clara de Tezanos and Andrés Asturias, working with different mediums such as painting, photographs, digital art and textile works following the mayan tradition of weaving.

Angélica Serech is a textile artist originally from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Her work reinvents the tradition of her Mayan kaqchikel heritage to propose textiles that introduce new colors and techniques to the textile tradition of Comalapa. Talking about the mayan traditions is also Sandra Monterroso. For this show, Monterroso presents works in blue, a color obtained using ancient dyeing techniques with indigo, a natural pigment used in the mayan tradition, connecting a color with its history.

Andrés Asturias contributes to this conversation, creating an altar using contemporary still lifes of flowers. The composition is part of the series “Noche de Mediodía”, a staging of altars, offerings, affections and nostalgias worked behind the scenes. Finally, Clara de Tezanos presents three NFTs from the series "La fuente es el Sol". These pieces are videos of small sculptures being activated with the sun, creating for the photographic lense a sparkle only visible in video.

For this edition of Art Paris, La Galería Rebelde featured the work of four contemporary artists from Guatemala, using different mediums to explore different approaches to nature, and art production itself.

Zona Maco 2022

February 9 - 13 / 2022

La Galería Rebelde presented for the 2022 edition of ZONA MACO three international artists whose work opens a conversation about "fragility"; thought from the materials and the fragility of the aspirations and the universe. Latin American artists JJ Estrada T., Karian Amaya and Gonzalo Hernández were showcased this year. For this edition of ZONA MACO, Galería Rebelde participated in the “EJES” section, with a conversation about the precariousness of materials, systems, technology, ideas and the deterioration of the landscape and the aspirations of progress, questioning the precariousness of our contemporary society and the systems that affect the dreams of the future.

Together 2021: Fantasies, Fictions and Fakes

November 29 / December 5, 2021

La Galería Rebelde presented three artists that represent the gallery’s program and future projects for the upcoming years. With two important women artists from Guatemala and one new media artist from México, la Galería Rebelde presents itself as a contemporary project that aims for the internationalization of Guatemala's art and the exchange of international artists with the local context.

From Guatemala, La Galería Rebelde presented two female artists that explore notions of the self, memory and their own relationship with body and nature from two different angles. They are also women whose work has made significant contributions to Guatemala’s art history and are now exploring new paths for their work. Clara de Tezanos searches for the “sacred” using light and color as a way to relate to nature and create immersive experiences with the spectators leading them to the present moment. Maria Adela Diaz presented her video performance “Blossom”, made in springtime at a mustard landscape in California. The piece creates a metaphor through color, presenting her in an oniric scenario dressed the same yellow tone as all the blossoms, speaking about her own experience as an immigrant woman, a condition in which color makes a difference.

Making another bold statement and representing the interest of the project with the dialogue between Guatemala and other contexts, Alonso Cedillo displayed the museum and gift shop of his project Friends of Corruption Museum (FoCM), using satire and humor to provoke situations that emphasize how deep corruption goes into our society.

This diverse program is only a glimpse of La Galería Rebelde’s project and a generator of multiple questions to revisit our present time through fictional scenarios and connections with body and identity, located in a social context dominated by power, image and fictions.
